Greta Salome will be the Icelandic representative at Eurovision in 2016. The decision came following the live final of Songvakeppnin on Saturday night where her song ‘Her Them Calling’ beat off stiff competition from five other songs.
The second of Iceland’s Songvakeppnin semi finals took place on Saturday night with three more acts moving on to the final. This includes Elisabet Ormslev, Alda Dis Arnardottir and Þórdís Birna Borgarsdóttir & Guðmundur Snorri Sigurðarson. Meanwhile Palmi Gunnarsson, Erna Mist & Magnus Thorlaeius and Helgi Valur Asgeirsson were eliminated from the contest.
Iceland’s Eurovision bid kicked off last night when the first semi final was staged with six of the twelve acts competing live. Three of these acts would advance and the other three were eliminated.
Iceland has appeared in Eurovision 28 times since they first competed in 1986. Although they came last on two occasions in 2001 and finishing with nul points in 1989, they have also had a decent run of success. Their best result was coming in in second place which happened in 1999 with ‘All Out Of Luck’ by Selma and again in 2009 with Yohanna’s ‘Is It True?’. More recently they have continually been finishing mid-bottom end of the leader board in the final. Their entry last year ‘Unbroken’ by Maria Olafs unfortunately failed to reach the final, despite being one of my favourite songs of the contest.
