Six nations automatically qualify for the Eurovision final. This is the host nation Portugal and the so-called ‘Big Five’ nations; France, Spain, Germany, Italy and United Kingdom. Portugal, as hosts got to choose the slot they would perform in at the final and last month chose number 8 spot. Today the Big Five took part in the draw to find out which half of the final they would compete in.

Reigning Eurovision champions Portugal continued their title defence when their national selection competition Festival da Cancao aired its final episode last night. Fourteen acts had advanced to the final (Diogo Passoa withdrew during the week, and was replaced by Susana Travassos) but only one could go on to represent the nation at Eurovision 2018. In the end the opted for Claudia Pascoal who will sing ‘O Jardim’ in May.
