Eurovision NI Awards 2017: The Winners!

Tonight saw the staging of the second ever annual Eurovision NI Awards in Belfast. Trophies were handed out in nineteen categories with the big winners on the night being Sweden’s Robin Bengtsson who took away three gongs including Best Male and Best Staging and Best Song for ‘I Can’t Go On’. Moldova’s Sunstroke Project received two awards including Best Group, Duo or Collaboration and Best Returning Act. The awards show also honoured Linda Martin who joined Sir Terry Wogan as those who have received the Phoenix Award for Outstanding Contribution to Eurovision. Eurovision NI Awards 2017: Best Group, Duo or Collaboration

Collaborations come in many forms and Eurovision 2017 saw possibly the most diverse selection in recent years. This year saw a yodeller team up with a rapper, a man duet with himself, the return of a band with an epic saxophonist, a wonderfully harmonised group made up of three sisters and a duo singing in the Belorussian language for the first time in Eurovision history. Duos are all the rage at Eurovision 2017, but NAVI BAND are easily my favourite. Arciom and
Ksienija bring their brand of Belorussian folk music to new audiences and their steadfast refusal to sing in any tongue but their own language is admirable, especially this year when they are one of five nations not singing in English out of a field of 43.  Continue reading
