Stadio Eurovision 2016 ItalyItaly’s weeklong marathon song contest, Sanremo came to a close last night. The overall ‘Big Artists’ was won by Stadio with their song ‘Un giorno mi dirai’. Sanremo 2016: Night 2 Results

Sanremo Italy Eurovision 2016The second of Italy’s Sanremo shows took place last night with ten more of the big artist acts perfroming. Of these ten,  six came top of the rankings while the other four were at risk of being eliminated. In addition to this the first of the new artists performed in ‘battles’. Four of these acts faced off against each other, with two progressing to the final and two getting eliminated. The overall winner will be crowned on Saturday on the final evening and will be given first refusal at representing Italy at Eurovision 2016. As well as having superstar Elton John perform as part of the festivities, ten acts competed in the competition proper. Of these ten,  six came top of the rankings while the other four were at risk of being eliminated. Eurovision 2016 Guide: Italy

As one of the Big Five, Italy automatically get to compete in the Eurovision Finals. Since their debut in the first contest in 1956, Italy have won twice (Gigliola Cinquetti in 1964 and Toto Cutugno in 1990), come second on four occasions (Franca Raimondi in 1956, Tonina Torrielli in 1956, Gigliola Cinquetti in 1974 and Raphael Gualazzi in 2011), they have also finished third five times including their most recent attempt with Il Volo in 2015. Italy didn’t participate in the contest between 1994 and 1996 and again from 1998 to 2010. What are their plans for 2016?
