Polish Eurovision fans have begun an online petition urging the Polish government to overturn the decision that saw Michal Szpak’s ‘Colour of Your Life’ chosen as their Eurovision 2016 pick. The fans were outraged that their favourite and runner up Margaret was not chosen as the Polish Eurovision act during Krajowe Eliminacje 2016 at the weekend.
In a change to the typical internal selection, Poland announced that the Polish public will choose their act and song for 2016 in a national selection show called Vox Populi. This competition featured nine acts and was staged last night- the winning entry being Michal Szpak’s ‘Colour of Your Life’.
Poland made their Eurovision debut in 1994 with Edyta Górniak’s ‘To nie ja!’. To date this is their best result, finishing in second place. In addition to their second place finish they have had one other top ten finish which was in 2003. Since then their best result has been 14th which they achieved with Cleo and Donotan’s ‘My Słowianie (We Are Slavic)’ in 2014. This song fared particularly in the televote but fell down when added to the jury votes. Poland did not participate in 2000, 2002, 2012 and 2013 and failed to qualify from the semi finals on six occasions between 2004 and 2012.
