Ukraine have selected Crimean Tatar singer Jamala as their representative for 2016. Her song ‘1944’ tells the story of the Crimean people (including her Great-grandmother) who were displaced from their homes by Soviet military forces during the Second World War.

After a one year absence from Eurovision due to financial difficulties associated with the ongoing Ukrainian Crisis, Ukraine are set to make a triumphant return in 2016. Since they began competing in 2003, Ukraine have proven time and again to be one of the more successful countries in the Contest’s recent history. With an unforgettable win in 2004 with Ruslana’s ‘Wild Dances’, back to back second places in 2007 and 2008 with Verka Serduchka and Ani Lorak, and finishing in the top ten eight out of the twelve times they have competed, Ukraine are cementing themselves as a Eurovision force to be reckoned with. But what can we expect in 2016?
