Tamta will represent Cyprus at Eurovision 2019 with the song ‘Replay’. Find out what we made of it.

Tamta had a tough act to follow, walking in the footsteps of Eleni Foureira who gave Cyprus their best ever Eurovision result in 2018 with the poptastic belter ‘Fuego’. ‘Replay’ sees Tamta work with the same team that produced and wrote ‘Fuego’ which has led to many people in the fandom referring to ‘Replay’ as the poor man’s ‘Fuego’.

I think the comparisons are unfair. Yes there are similarities, but why is that a bad thing? ‘Fuego’ had a formula that clearly worked, so why not try to emulate that success by taking elements of that song that worked and rejigging these for a 2019 audience?

‘Replay’ has some unfortunate lyrics that could be misheard and misinterpreted. The opening line could just as easily be ‘You got a problem between your mom and your head’ as what the actual lyrics are ‘You got a problem. 2 A.M., I’m in your head’. And then theres the problematic ‘I’m shitting my body tonight. Mmm.’ (or ‘The sheets stain my body tonight. Mmm’ as the actual lyrics go).

Misheard lyrics aside, ‘Replay’ is a masterful, Mediterranean musical melody that is headed nowhere but the dance floor. The song lives up to its title in that I have had it on replay ever since it debuted in February. The staging for the song is strong with a team of backing dancers and and fireworks to keep the party vibe going.

Cyprus should sail into the Grand Final and maybe even the top ten if Tamta can work out a few of the kinks in her performance from the rehearsals.
