Romania have chosen Ester Peony as their Eurovision representative for 2019. She will sing the song ‘On A Sunday’ in Tel Aviv. Read on to hear our thoughts.

‘On a Sunday’ is a fresh, current ballad with a spooky pop edge. It opens with a warped guitar sound and has a persistent drum beat that permeates throughout. Then there’s Ester’s voice. It literally gives me chills, it’s genuinely haunting. I love how her voice spills over into the next line, in a pained almost whine, really emphasising the feelings that she is singing about.

Her voice reminds me of early Sia when she performed with Zero 7. The song has a catchy chorus and all of this is elevated by Ester’s confident sense of style which comes out in both her music video for the song and the staging which we got a preview of during first rehearsals earlier this week.

There are times when the rhymes in the lyrics are a bit lazy and corny. Did Ester’s love interest really leave her on that day in September or is it just for the convenience of it rhyming with ‘Remember’?

I would like to confidently say that we will be seeing Romania in the Grand Final but she has been placed in the tougher of the two semi finals, a semi final that is rich with other female ballads. The hope is that she may just about pip through.
