Joci Papai returns to the Eurovision stage for Hungary in 2019. He will represent the nation with the song ‘Az en Apam’. This is what we made of it.

Back in 2017 Joci Papai represented Hungary with song ‘Origo’. I did not like the song at first. In fact it wasn’t until the night of the Grand Final when I found myself going to the bar to get a drink that I found myself humming along to the song that I realised actually this is quite good.

I was then excited to hear that Joci would return to compete at A Dal 2019. Again I was struck that I didn’t think much of ‘Az en Apam’ on the first listen, but the more I listen to it the more I like it. It isn’t a far cry from ‘Origo’. In fact it has many of the same musical traits but is slightly slower in tempo. The ballad draws on Hungarian folk roots and instead of the warbling refrain in Romani, ‘Az en apam’ has a whistling refrain.

The song is about Joci’s childhood memories, which is reflected in the song’s music video. Joci as always has a strong vocal and this should be enough to propel him to the final of Eurovision in a few weeks.
