Serhat Returns to Eurovision for San Marino in 2019!

The rumours can all be put to bed now! Serhat will represent San Marino at Eurovision for the second time in 2019. The artist announcement was made at a press conference by broadcaster SMRTV this morning.

Fans will remember the Turkish born crooner from Eurovision 2016 where he missed out on a place in the final, coming 12th in his semi final. He sang the song ‘I Didn’t Know’. This morning’s announcement will come as a bit of a shock to Sanmarinese fans who were expecting Rodrigo Alves aka the Human Ken Doll or  Daryana Kraieva’s ‘Hi, Wi-Fi!’ to be the micro state’s pick for 2019.

Serhat has been working on a new album for the past few months and is delighted to return to Eurovision for San Marino:

‘San Marino is always in my heart, our friendship lasts forever and ESC 2016 was probably one of the best memories of my career. Despite my tight schedule, it didn’t take me long to decide. I am very proud to represent San Marino for the second time’.

Serhat is not the first artist to represent San Marino multiple times. However, he will have to return to the Contest another three times if he is to beat Valentina Monetta’s record breaking four appearances at Eurovision in 2012, 2013, 2014 and with Jimmie Wilson in 2017. Valentina is also the only act to give San Marino a song that reached the final when ‘Maybe (Forse)’ achieved this feat in 2015.

Serhat’s song choice for 2019 remains a secret, but we can expect it to debut in the next few months ahead of the March deadline.
