The Czech Republic chose their Eurovision artist for 2018 by a national final. Six artists competed but the runaway winner was Mikolas Josef. He scored top points with both the jury and the public televote giving him a total of 16 points, this was a full 7 points ahead of second place Debbi. Mikolas will sing ‘Lie to Me’ at Eurovision 2018.

The song is a pop track with a trumpet playing throughout and it is easy to make comparisons between it and Jason Derulo’s hit song ‘Talk Dirty’. And damn does Mikolas talk dirty on this track. Just a sample of some of the lyrics include: ‘By the way she moved got me making a puddle’ and ‘Mom I’m feeling home already but steady/Plenty motherfuckers wanna eat my spaghetti/Then she got one of my friends/She got him dripping on wood/I know it hurt so bad but it feels so good/Quit sweet talking me now baby I don’t give a fuck you/should have thought about me before you fucked him at the club.’

Needless to say, Eurovision is a family show and as such Mikolas has had to clean his lyrics up a little for sensitive ears. Nevertheless the song is a complete cracker and when you look at the video for it you can see Mikolas inject his humour into it with the random inclusion of a camel.  This combination makes ‘Lie to Me’ easily the best Czech song in years, if not ever.

The staging has had everyone speculating just what is in his backpack? Speculation has increased further when Mikolas ran a competition on his social media account. One lucky winner who guesses correctly what his bag contains will be treated to Mikolas flying to their town to perform for them at a venue of their choice!

Some bad news came the way of fans of Mikolas when it was revealed that the singer had to be rushed to hospital at the start of last week. He had injured himself in rehearsals when he attempted to do a back flip as part of his staging and it went horribly wrong. He has been given the all clear to go ahead with his performance, but it may end up being less energetic and detract from the overall effect of the song.

That said, Mikolas should easily make the final from tomorrow night’s first semi final and could give Czech Republic a top ten finish, the first they’ve ever got.
