Eleni Foureira was chosen internally to represent Cyprus at Eurovision 2018. She will sing the song ‘Fuego’ in the first of the semi finals tomorrow night.

I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SONG! It harks back to the golden era of epic pop songs from the Eastern Mediterranean. When we think of Greece or Cyprus in their Eurovision hey day we think of bangers like Ivi Adamou’s ‘La La Love’, Elena Paparizou’s ‘My Number One’, Elftheria Elftheriou’s ‘Aphrodisiac’ or Kalomira’s ‘Secret Combination’. ‘Fuego’ is very much cut from the same cloth as these popular Eurovision hits.

The song’s title may be Spanish meaning hot or fire, but the song is entirely in English except for the repetition of ‘Fuego’. When asked in a recent interview what the title meant, Eleni replied ‘Yeah, yeah. Fire’. Her response has launched many reactionary gifs on social media.

Another aspect that has won over the Eurovision fandom is Eleni’s music video for ‘Feugo’. Not only does it deliver everything you’d expect from a modern pop music video, but it also sees ridiculous product placement. This includes beauty company Perfectil, vitamin company Vitabiotics and most ridiculous of them all: the awkward placement of pineapples and bananas for fruit company Fyffes. This running joke has inspired me to create my own T shirt for the occasion:

The video culminates in Eleni walking towards the camera and as the song ends she tosses a lighter behind her causing a car to explode into flames!

The song’s lyrics have also got chins wagging. ‘You got me pelican fly fly flyin’’ is probably one of the most memorable lines from this year’s contest, and while it may be pure nonsense, it helps the song stand out even further.

There is no doubt that this is easily my fave song from this year and finally as we approach the finals, everyone else is coming to this realisation as well. The song has drastically seen its odds shorten after the rehearsals last week which saw Eleni complete a high octane dance routine with her troupe of backing dancers. It now stands as the third favourite to win the contest outright and I hope this rings true and in the very least gives Cyprus the top five spot they deserve.
