Belgium are riding a euphoric wave of Eurovision success having placed fourth, tenth and fourth in the last three years. They have shown that they are not afraid to take risks and often this risk taking pays off for them. Unfortunately despite solid finishes in 2015, 2016 and 2017, they haven’t been able to convert this into the nation’s second victory. For 2018 they have chosen Laura Groeseneken aka SENNEK, hoping she can solidify their recent success with song ‘A Matter of Time’.

‘A Matter of Time’ screams Bond theme. More specifically it reminds me of the Sheryl Crow theme song from ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’. It sees Laura teaming up with Alex Callier Maxime Tribèche to assist her in the writing and what is a slick production.

Laura is seasoned artist who knows who she is, yet at the same time she has a youthful vigour that allows her to experiment and express herself well. Her vocal has Jazzy and soulful undertones, yet the song is a modern indie pop ballad which melodically plods along to an electrifyingly charged chorus which showcases Laura’s outstanding vocal ability. ‘A Matter of Time’ is at times moody with thoughtful musings about the frustration of being in a failing relationship.

Belgium is a strong contender with the bookies at 12/1 and SENNEK will undoubtedly make the final. She will also most likely keep up their streak of top ten finishes, but I can’t see it improving on their best recent result of fourth place.
