Who says Eurovision is all pomp and flashy, generic, meaningless pop nonsense? Ermal Meta and Fabrizio Moro team up to give us ‘Non Mi Avete Fatto Niente’ (You Haven’t Done Anything To Me), the Italian Eurovision song for 2018.

The song gets as close to the political line as Eurovision will allow. It tackles the recent string of terrorist attacks across Europe and the Middle East, namely Nice, Manchester, Paris, Barcelona and Cairo. The lyrics mourn the loss of those who died in the attacks as well as questioning just what it is that the terrorists hope to achieve by attacking innocent civilians in these cities?

The main refrain in the chorus of ‘You Haven’t Done Anything To Me’ is a powerful one. It says we should not live in fear. It says no matter what the terrorists do, we are going to go on living our lives. Our resolve is strengthened by these attacks, not weakened. The terrorists will not win. Their war is pointless. While the ideas expressed are typical of any news report following a terrorist attack, the language used in the lyrics to this song is more nuanced:

You haven’t done anything to me
You’ve taken nothing from me
This is my life, and it keeps going
Beyond everything, beyond people
You haven’t done anything to me
You haven’t won anything
Because there’s more than your pointless wars

The tone of the song is poignant and serious but there is a flicker of hope as well. This is reflected in the soft rock musical style of the song. While it is sombre in the beginning and while the vocals sound angry at times, the melody of the song is hopeful and doesn’t dwell on pessimism.

Fabrizio and Ermal have great stage chemistry and the pair bounce well off each other. In terms of staging I would expect a stripped back performance with just the musicians on the stage and perhaps a backdrop with lyrics to the song in different languages.

As one of the Big Five nations, Italy automatically have a place in the final. I think this song has potential to do quite well and will finish on the top half of the points scoreboard.
