Denmark are calling on their Viking heritage for inspiration for their Eurovision 2018 song ‘Higher Ground’. Drama teacher turned Pop-Rock God Rasmussen is at the helm of the longship for the 2018 Contest and he is hoping that he can turn around their recent string of disappointing results (20th in 2017, and no qualifier in 2016 and 2015).

Rasmussen very much looks the part, channeling his inner Tormund Giantsbane from ‘Game of Thrones’ with his long ginger hair and beard to complete the full Viking package. In fact his look was something that the Danish broadcaster DR were very keen on matching with the song. He remarked in a recent interview that ‘They were seeking someone who looked like a Viking who could sing. In the end it appeared that I was exactly what they wanted.’

The song is very contagious and infects your mind with its perfectly executed harmonies which is one of the song’s main strengths. I think it could all come down to how the perfromance is presented. If they rejig the staging from the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix so it is more of a spectacle, they could really be on to something. They could borrow Navi Band’s boat from last year and give it a bit of an upgrade and have the backing singers row in unison as the backdrop recreates the visual of a stormy sea. Crank the wind machine up to full whack and it should ensure the wind is behind them to help them easily sail into the Final from Semi Final 2.
