Bulgaria returned to Eurovision in 2016 after a two year absence. The break seems to have worked wonders for them. Having previously only qualified for the Grand Final once out of nine attempts, Poli Genova hurtled them into the top five and last year Kristian Kostov did even better giving them a second place finish for ‘Beautiful Mess’. Not wanting to fix something that isn’t broken, they have internally selected their Eurovision participants for the third year on the trot and this year it’s the band Equinox that Bulgaria will be putting all their hopes in.

The band is a five piece collaborative project between Bulgarian and American singers, songwriters and producers. The finished product is a song called ‘Bones’. The song has a mystical, almost otherworldly feel to it. This comes out in the lyrics which open ‘Your love is a black hole. Everything is dark.’ This lyrics set the tone for the rest of the song which sees perfectly executed harmonies on the chorus which almost sound like an occult chant.

The supernatural quality set up in the song is furthered with the look of the band. They all dress in black and some with druid like hoods, making the platinum blonde hair of female singer Zhana Bergendorff stand out all that more.

The song is a decent effort and if they get the staging right for the live performance, Bulgaria could continue the success of the past two years. I want something dark and wacky and for them to give us something unexpected. I definitely think a top ten finish is on the cards for Equinox.
