‘Tonight Matthew, I am going to be… Bonnie Tyler!’ The lead vocalist from Romanian band the Humans, Cristina Caramarcu, could very well pass for the legendary Welsh and Eurovision 2013 songstress. Not only does she look like Bonnie, but she sounds like her too. The vocals on the band’s 2018 Eurovision song ‘Goodbye’ are as raspy and as gravelly as the ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ singer.

The style and genre of the song are also a little Bonnie-esque, and it ticks all the boxes to fit into the genre of power ballad. The vocals are strong on ‘Goodbye’ and it has a bit of a rocky edge when all the other band members come together with their instruments. ‘Goodbye’ is big when it needs to go big (mainly in the pre-chorus and the chorus which really showcases Cristina’s talent) and is also tender and gentle in parts (most notably in the beginning when Cristina sings unaccompanied except for a single beat on the keyboard). This tenderness is shown again after the rip roar of the chorus, when the song momentarily quietens down.

Despite many flashes of promise, it’s hard to fully get behind ‘Goodbye’. It feels like there is something lacking, and it could well be personality. The band are seasoned musicians and very skilled with their instruments, but it’s difficult to get a sense of who they are. This is evident from the music video for the song which doesn’t seem to convey much meaning or artistic ambition and instead is just a performance of the song which involves a lot of standing around.

Can Cristina and the Humans finish higher than her lookalike Bonnie Tyler’s disappointing 19th place finish in 2013? Although they are in the easier of the two semi finals, I’m not sure that their song has the wherewithal to make it through and we may be saying ‘Goodbye’ to them before the Final.
