Artist: Elina Nechayeva
Song: La Forza
Betting Odds: 6/1
Elina Nechayeva quickly became one of the favourites with bookies when her operatic vocals and impressive projection dress saw her chosen as the Estonian representative for 2018. She has proven herself as a ‘La Forza’ to be reckoned with and her popularity has grown with the Eurovision fanbase. The song however is something I just can’t get behind. While her vocal ability is no doubt phenomenal, I have little or no knowledge or interest in the genre of Opera or Popera. While Elina has a polished, classically trained voice and she beautifully belts out the lyrics, for all I know or care her track could be about the fixtures for the Premier League- it just doesn’t interest me and is not on my radar.
The song is not about football, rather it is a love song. Written by a team consisting of Ksenia Kuchukova, Mihkel Mattisen (Estonia’s 2013 Eurovision songwriter), Timo Vendt (Estonia’s 2014 songwriter and Elina herself, the song is performed in Italian. This is an odd choice as most nations tend to perform in their own language or English, however the choice is a fitting one as most classic operas tend to be performed in the Italian language, so it lends itself well to the genre.
Apart from Elina’s vocal ability, the remarkable talking point about her performance at the national selection show was undoubtedly her staging. This comprised of a ridiculously lavish and long ball gown which saw different light projections shone onto it throughout the song to assist with conveying the emotions Elina was singing about. The problem? This dress is so expensive to transport, that it may not be making an appearance at Eurovision and therefore all that effort that was put into the song’s staging may see them back at square one.
While this knock back regarding the dress could hurt her chances, I have no doubt that this song will be making it to the final.
