2018 will see Azerbaijan compete at Eurovision for the eleventh time. For the past three years broadcaster ITV have chosen their Eurovision contestant by an internal selection process and 2018 is no different. They announced today that it will be Aisel who will fly the flag for them at Lisbon next year.
Aysel Mammadova was chosen by an internal jury on 8th November. Typical to recent years, the artist announcement comes without a song, which we can expect at a later date (probably the beginning of March).
A Baku native, Aisel attended the Bulbul School of Music and is a singer, plays piano and even composes her own music. Her favourite genre of music is Jazz and she regularly performs at a number of high profile Jazz and Blues festivals throughout Europe.
Azerbaijan are one of the most successful nations in recent Eurovision history, having qualified for the final in every contest that they have competed in. This includes a win in 2011 for Ell and Nikki for ballad ‘Running Scared’, a second place finish for Farid Mammadov in 2013 and third place for duo Aysel and Arash in 2009.
