Romania yodelled their way to a top ten placing at Eurovision 2017. The nation will return to Eurovision in 2018 and today they announced their plans to choose their artist and song for Lisbon.
Today Romanian broadcaster TVR will organize a major selection show for Eurovision 2018. This will kick off with an preselection stage that will see a jury select the entries to take part in an initial online broadcast. This will be followed up with a Melfest style live show that will include five semi-finals and a national final, held in six cities in Romania in January/February 2018.
Spokesperson for the Romanian Eurovision Delegation 2018 stated:
‘We want to bring Eurovision shows closer to viewers from all corners of the country, in a special year for Romanians everywhere – the Centenary of the Great Union. We also propose that the event be one of a series of ample actions that public television will produce and disseminate in 2018.’
Romania have had a decent track record at Eurovision, having qualified for the final every year that they participated since the semi finals were introduced in 2004. Money issues led to their disqualification in 2016, but they came back all guns blazing last year with Ilinca and Alex Florea’s ‘Yodel It!’ finishing in 7th place. Romania’s best result to date was in 2010 when duo Ovi and Paula Seling came third with ‘Playing With Fire’.
