After a year’s absence from Eurovision, Portugal will return in 2017. Rumours were abundant including one that international superstar Nelly Furtado could be poised to make an appearance at Eurovision representing the nation, however these rumours were later rubbished by Nelly’s team. Despite that we are looking forward to the selection show Festival Da Cancao.
16 composers have submitted entries for the contest which will take place over two semi finals on the 19th and 26th February, with the final consisting of eight qualifying song being held on 5th March.
Portugal has introduced some changes to proceedings for 2017, in an effort to maximise the impact the song can have and to improve on their recent poor record (they haven’t qualified for the final since 2010). These new rules include allowing non-Portuguese language songs to compete and they have also opted to give the public more of a say. This means that the winning song will be decided by a 50/50 public vote/jury split.
