Tonight saw Rotterdam host the 2016 edition of the MTV European Music Awards. Among the winners on the night was Amir, the French act for Eurovision 2016 and Polish singer Margaret who missed out on representing her country at Eurovision this year.
The awards show was hosted by Bebe Rexha and featured performances from international stars such as Shawn Mendes, Kings of Leon, Greenday and OneRepublic.
Amir won the award for Best French Act, while Margaret was victorious in the category of Best Polish Act, triumphing over 2014 Polish Eurovision representative Cleo. Other Eurovision singers nominated on the night but unsuccessful in bringing home a regional artist award included Douwe Bob (Best Dutch Act), Laura Tesoro (Best Belgian Act), and Emma Marrone and Francesca Michielin (Best Italian Act).
Other big wins on the night included Shawn Mendes picking up Best Male, Zara Larrson who won Best New Act and The Weeknd who won Best Video for their song ‘Starboy’ with Daft Punk.
Greenday where honoured in the Global Icon award. Previous recipients of the award have included Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Eminem, Bon Jovi and Queen.
