Slovenia have made twenty one appearances at Eurovision. Their best result, seventh, has been achieved on two occasions- in 1995 (‘Prisluhni mi’ by Darja Švajger) and 2001 with ‘Energy’ by Nuša Derenda (who is one of the acts competing to be the 2016 entry). Slovenia have qualified for the final on only four occasions since the semi finals were introduced in 2004. Most recently Slovenia were represented by Maraaya in 2015 with their song ‘Here for You’ which finished in fourteenth in the final, a solid result by Slovene standards.
But what have Slovenia got in store for us in 2016? Read on to find out!
As in 2015, Slovenian national broadcaster RTVSLO will select the Eurovision entry through its live show format Evrovizijska Melodija or EMA for short. It was announced earlier this week that ten acts will compete in the live final on 27th February.
The winner will be decided over two rounds of voting. In round one, three music industry experts will select two finalists out of the ten competing songs to proceed to a superfinal. Each member of the expert jury will assign a score of 1 to 5 with the two songs with the highest combined score advancing. The winner out of these two remaining songs will then be decided by a public televote only.
While we await confirmation of the songs for the contest, we do know which artists are in the running. We take a look at them below:
Between 2004 and 2009 Anja was a part of band Ange. During this time she developed her songwriting skills. She has also participated in the Slovenian version of X-Factor in 2012 reaching the Boot Camp stages. Interestingly in 2005 she acted as backing vocalist for fellow competitor in EMA 2016, Nusa Derenda, as well as a further two times for other acts in 2006 and 2015. She has been releasing a steady stream of solo singles since 2011 and in 2015 she returned with new album ‘Punca iz tvoje ulice’. Listen to her cover of Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ below.
Anja Kotar is an 18-year old singer songwriter, although originally from Slovenia, she moved to San Jose in 2012. She is a classically trained pianist and dancer, winning the World Show Dance Championship with her dance group in 2008. She has also acted in the most viewed Slovenian movie “Going Our Way” and its sequel and featured on the Slovenian X-Factor. Following a recent Kickstarter campaign, she released her debut album. Listen to her cover of Adele’s ‘Hello’.
D Base (which means the base end, not to de-base someone) is made up of lead vocalist Benjamin Dolić who is heavily influenced by the work of Michael Jackson and rapper Nejc Žehelj who operates under the name 9KA and Croatian rapper and producer Rolando Orlandi. Check out their song ‘Tvoj Dan’.
Even as a teenager ManuElla played and sang in various bands. She graduated from music school (piano accordion)but her passion has always been singing. In 2005 she performed in the show Battle Talent (Home Again), and in 2010 was selected among the top 100 in the talent show Germany Das SuperTalent, appeared in the semi-finals of the Mission Eurovision 2012 and came fifth in the Slovenian Pop Song 2013. She is currently recording her first English language album.
Nusa is a Eurovision veteran. She gave Slovenia their best ever result when she competed with ‘Energy’ in 2001, coming seventh, a record that has yet to be bettered by a Slovenian entry. From 1998-2015 she has released a string of successful singles and she even returned to compete to be Slovenia’s Eurovision entry on three occasions after 2001, including 2003 (third semi final with ‘Prvič in zadnjič’, 2005 (fourth with ‘Noe, Noe’) and in 2010 (where she only managed ninth place with ‘Sanjajva’). Will she have better luck in 2016?
Not going to lie, it took a while to get over my disappointment that this wasn’t Raven from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Nevertheless Raiven is equally as talented, a student at Ljubljana’s Academy of Music, she is an expert harpist. The singer has also won numerous awards in the field of classical music and is a keen Jazz-lover. Will be interesting to see what she brings to the table for EMA 2016!
If you could say anyone’s career is defined by EMA, it is Regina. The singer has competed a whopping seven times in the country’s national selection process. She has only won the contest once in 1996 with ‘Dan najlepših sanj’. At Eurovision however the song only managed to place 21st out of 23 entries. She has also competed in 1993 (4th place), 1998 (3rd place), 2001 (8th Place), 2002 (7th place), 2004 (10th place) and in 2005 (9th place). God loves a trier, and she’s back again in 2016, after an 11 year absence from the contest. But will she win?
SAN Di EGO
Formed in 2013, SAN Di EGo are made up of Sergei Škofljanec (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano), Matic Ajdič (guitar, vocals), Jure Doles (drums) and Martin Rozman (baskitara, vocals). Their first single ‘The Last Cent’ was met with commercial success in Slovenia and was followed up by ‘Sun is Where You Are’ showing off the boys’ gentler side. They are probably best known for their cover of BeeGees classic ‘Stayin’ Alive’.
Sebastijan is a singer and multi-instrumentalist with a versatile style and who works over various genres. Interesting fact: he is a permanent member of the puppet theatre Pika. As well as being a solo artist he is also a member of several bands including- LEONART, The Swingtones and Zebra.
Our final contender is Zan Sercic. Zan is a singer, author and guitar teacher. His professional music career began when he appeared in the final of Slovenia’s Got Talent in 2011. In 2012 he published his first poem entitled ‘What About Us’. In September 2012 he began to teach at the music school Muziklub in Lenart, teaching a classical guitar program. He continues to write new music and poetry.
