Eurovision 2016 Guide: Iceland

Iceland Eurovision 2016

Iceland has appeared in Eurovision 28 times since they first competed in 1986. Although they came last on two occasions in 2001 and finishing with nul points in 1989, they have also had a decent run of success. Their best result was coming in in second place which happened in 1999 with ‘All Out Of Luck’ by Selma and again in 2009 with Yohanna’s ‘Is It True?’. More recently they have continually been finishing mid-bottom end of the leader board in the final. Their entry last year ‘Unbroken’ by Maria Olafs unfortunately failed to reach the final, despite being one of my favourite songs of the contest.

RUV have decided to continue with their Songvakeppnin (literally TV singing competition) selection process for 2016. The competition will see twelve acts compete to be crowned the Icelandic entry for 2016. This will happen over two semi finals held on 6th and 13th February where three acts from each will progress to the final on 20th February, as voted for by the Icelandic public. The six acts will be joined by a wild card chosen from the remaining entries by the jury.

In the final the seven acts will compete over two stages. The first round of voting which is 50/50 televote and jury vote will determine the top two acts who will sing off to be crowned the winner by a 100% public vote.

Who will follow in the footsteps of Maria Olafs to be Iceland’s 2016 Eurovision entry?

Among the 2016 hopefuls are 2012 Eurovision competitor Greta Salome Stefansdottir who finished in 20th place with her duet with Jonsi ‘Never Forget’ and Palmi Gunnarsson who competed as part of ICY (Iceland’s first Eurovision entry). They are joined by The Voice of Iceland contestant Karlotta Sigurðardótti and Adele inspired singer Elísabet Ormslev. See below for the full list of songs, and vote for your favourite in our poll.
