2015 seems to be the year for male female duos singing ballads. Not one to deviate from this theme, Czech Republic have chosen Marta Jandova and Vaclav Noid Barta as their entry for this year and their song is- shocker!- a piano ballad called ‘Hope Never Dies’. 2015 sees Czech Republic return to the contest following a five year haitus, and they are hoping to return to the contest with a bang. Can they deliver this? Read on to find out.
Despite the song’s title, my hope for Czech Republic’s chances have died. I feel as though the song isn’t strong enough to stand out on its own and set the two apart from the other duos. The pair don’t have the same vocal power as some of the other two pieces (such as Norway’s Morland and Debrah Scarlet or Estonia’s Stig Rasta and Elina Born) nor do they have the chemistry seen in some of the other male female duos (for instance Lithuania’s Monika Linkyte and Vaidas Baumila).
Vaclav has a rocky gruffness to his voice as he does his best Chris Daughtry impression. This is in stark contrast to the pop stylings of Marta and despite doing their best to merge the two voices together, they aren’t able to pull it off successfully.
The lyrics are typical Eurovision cliche with overused choice words like hope, future, darkness and light and love etc. These cliches are dwelled upon further in the video which sees Vaclav a tribal tattooed muscle machine strut around dressed all in black as the choice cliches flash up on the screen in gold ‘Love’. Meanwhile Marta also dressed in black walks around a mirrored corridor as it snows ‘Hope’. The pair converge as the black and white becomes colour ‘Fire’. The big finale sees the two of them sing at each other in front of big expensive lights and wind machine with the final reveal of lyrics (the song’s title) ‘Hope Never Dies’.
On the plus side Vaclav has a nice manscarf.
We are pretty confident that you will not be seeing Czech Republic perform in the final. Maybe you disagree? If so let us know by commenting below and voting for ‘Hope Never Dies’ if it’s your favourite in our poll.
