A distorted drum beat opens Switzerland’s entry for the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest for Melanie Renee’s ‘Time to Shine’. The song goes from strength to strength as the chorus kicks in and the Renee’s strong vocals belt out powerful lyrics ‘I’m living my dreams/Never been so alive/The sky’s the limit/Now I know I can fly.’
The song was easily the best song from Switzerland’s national selection list of contenders and when I first heard the song it reminded me a bit of the early Sugababes indie songs like ‘Overload’, ‘Freak Like Me’ and ‘Run For Cover’.
The video which accompanies the song seems like Renee has drawn inspiration from Pocahontas, dressed in a native American dress with fringed sleeves, has her face painted and has a headdress as she wanders through the forest with her horse in the snow. This setting is cut between shots of Renee singing in the studio against a black backdrop and interspersed with shots of her singing under a billowing white bedsheet. Check it out for yourself.
In terms of her chances at the contest, we think the song will perform quite well. It will most likely qualify from its semi final and finish up somewhere mid-field in the final- 14th-17th.
