Review: Hungary- Andras Kallay Saunders ‘Running’

Is Andras in the ‘Running’ for a Eurovision win?

‘Running’ is another of my favourite Eurovision entries for this year and it comes from Hungarian Andras Kallay Saunders. He has already achieved a great deal of success in Hungary scoring three top ten hit singles; ‘Csak Veled’, ‘I Love You’ and ‘Tonight’ a collaboration with Swedish rapper Rebstar. He has also competed in Hungarian TV talent show ‘Megasztar’ after returning from New York to help take care of his ill grandmother. He ended up finishing in 4th place and he is currently dating Renata Tolvai who won the competition in 2010.

Andras’s ‘Running’ is a great song with serious issues at its heart. While it has morose verses, this is contrasted with a very lively chorus which gets increasingly livelier with the fast-paced drum beat. The video reflects the song’s strong subject matter and deals with living in an abusive family. A young child wants to get away from her hostile home life where her father is violent towards her and her mother by running away. At times the video is quite graphic and images like the woman who takes of her mask to reveal she has been crying with mascara running down her face is very poignant.

While I feel the song is an overall success, I think using Eurovision as a sounding board to bring these matters to the fore will not be met with open arms. Rather Eurovision is a time to celebrate what can unite and bring us together, themes that are fun, joyous as after all Eurovision really is a great big party. I think this song therefore will be overlooked as trying to kill the party vibe, which is a great shame.

  1. Nice comment regarding the not so positive message in the song, I haven’t thought of that before and you’re right but Hungary is one of my favorites to win this year too.
