ABBA to record new material?

It’s been 40 years since ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Waterloo’. Since then they’ve went on to have an illustrious and unrivalled pop career with amazing classic songs written by band members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. Speaking to the Daily Star over the weekend ABBA stars Bjorn Ulvaeus and Frida Lyngstad said that they would be willing to get back together andperhaps even record new material if the songs were right. Lyngstad remarked that:

‘It’s difficult to talk about this because all the news stories will be “Abba is going to record another song”. But as long as we can sing and play, then why not? I would love to, but it would be up to Benny and Bjorn.’

While Ulvaeus said that new material was unlikely, he kept some hope alive when he said:

‘Nothing’s planned and it would have to be something special. But yes, why not?’

Ulvaeus has also criticised the UK’s tendency to blame their lack of recent Eurovision success on stigma. He said at the end of the day ‘the best song wins’ and it is up to the UK to secure the best songwriters and performers for the job.

The last few years the UK have relied on an internal selection process. If you compare this to Sweden’s national selection process Melodifestivalen, which is an elaborate competition which is voted for by the public and which has multiple qualifying rounds and even has a second chance semi-final to ensure the best song doesn’t get overlooked. The result of this in depth search for a Eurovision star is reflected in the results with Sweden constantly finishing in the top 10 and not only a third place finish for Eric Saade in 2011 but a win for Loreen in 2012. Sweden are also amongst the favourites to win this year’s competition with Sanna Nielsen’s ‘Undo’.

  1. Not a single mention of Agnetha, WHY NOT? She is as much part of the group as the others are, if not a bit more so.

  2. By the way, the sentence “…Since then they’ve went on…” is really bad English, it should be Since then they’ve gone on …”

  3. Although Benny and Bjorn wrote most of the material, I have seen but forgotten the names of a few songs which were written by Agnetha
