Azerbaijan have probably had the best track record in recent Eurovision history. They won the competition with Ell and Niki in 2011 (even though it should have gone to Sweden’s Eric Saade for his song ‘Popular’, but we’ll nit get into that just now), they came second last year with Farid Mammadov’s ‘Hold Me’ (after some suspicious voting irregularities and accusations of bribing votes for neighbouring countries) and have consistently finished in the top ten since they began competing at Eurovision in 2008.
This year it’s finally Dilara Kazimova’s turn to take centre stage for the Azerbaijani entry with her ballad ‘Start a Fire’ which sees the former Opera Singer and actor belt out the ballad accompanied by Azerbaijan’s national instrument the balaban. Given the impressive track record of the country I am inclined to think that this song will make it to the top ten but will it get lost in amongst other songs in a year that is seeing an overwhelming amount of ballads compete for the win? Let us know what you think.
